Amongst various sequelae, mucormycosis may be considered as the most debilitating one. Post COVID-19 mucormycosis is formally regarded as corona virus disease associated mucormycosis (CAM). The aim of the current paper is to present twelve cases of CAM with unique clinical presentation with a detailed histopathological correlation of the gingival biopsied material. Twelve cases of CAM were included in the study who presented initially with non-purulent swelling of the gingiva. The clinic-demographic data pertaining to age, gender, location, laterality and pres…

Sensitive nerve function measurement in facial trauma : an observational study

2020

Background Facial trauma is responsible for various types of health damage and may be functional or aesthetic. Depending on the degree of energy released in this type of trauma, sometimes an irreversibility degree is obtained. This study aimed to perform an objective evaluation of traumatic peripheral nerve injuries resulting from mandibular fractures and midface, using silicon monofilaments. Material and Methods This was an observational, cross-sectional study. All patients with maxillofacial fractures, who were hospitalized by the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Instituto Dr. José Frota Hospital, were randomly recruited and screened for inclusion in the present study. Classification of orbital exenteration and reconstruction

2017

Orbital exenteration (OE) is considered to be a mutilating surgical procedure reserved for relentlessly progressive neoplastic disorders or extensive facial trauma with unfavourable eye involvement. Malignant tumours, accounting for the majority of ablative orbital surgeries, may be caused by primary orbital tumours or secondarily by neoplasias from the surrounding skin, the maxillary sinus or intracranial malignomas. Orbital exenteration following trauma is mostly caused by penetrating globe defects or extended infections with the danger of intracranial effects. Thoughtful resection planning, the exploitation of reconstructive possibilities as well as the consideration of adjuvant therapy …

Background: The objective was to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) before and after surgical treatment of zygomatic complex fracture and assess patients’ perceptions of the aesthetic and functional outcomes of surgery. Material and Methods: A prospective study of 79 adult patients before and after surgery for zygomatic complex fracture was conducted. HRQoL was measured using the generic 15-dimensional (15D) instrument, and patient satisfaction was assessed by an additional questionnaire. Results: The mean preoperative 15D score for patients was lower than for general population that was matched for age and gender (p=0.011). The mean 15D score was lowest on the first postoperat…
